Olive's Unicorn Birthday Party
February is pretty much insane for our family. With Milo's and Olive's birthday sandwiched around Valentine's day, this month feels like non-stop class parties and family get togethers and more cake & candy than we know what to do with. We don't do big parties for the kids every year, but we decided to do a special one for each of them when they turned five, and this was Olive's year (someone hold me). She asked for a unicorn party, and upon realizing that this might actually be my last opportunity to plan a Pinterest-y soiree ever again, (Ella has long since moved on to sleepovers, and Milo basically just wants to hang with his buds and play Minecraft)...I was HERE FOR IT.
We rented space in the Lewis Ginter Recreation Association, where we're pool members. This gave us a nice big room to set up the food, but we also had the entire gym at our disposal to let the kids run off all the sugar. We invited her entire preschool class, and were so happy that almost all of them were able to be there. A few of her sweet little friends even dressed up in their unicorn dresses and horns for the occasion. But what do you do with 16 preschoolers in the middle of February, you ask? Balloons in the gym. We blew up lots and lots of balloons. What kid (or adult, for that matter) can resist a good game of balloon toss? We also went old school with Pin the Horn on the Unicorn, a Unicorn Ring Toss, and a table with crafts and unicorn cut-outs to decorate for the more introverted, creative types (or anyone who basically needed a break from the constant running and shrieking in the gym. #itme).
But probably the BEST thing about her party was the cotton candy cart we rented through KD Productions. It was the perfect, whimsical touch to her party. My favorite flavor was birthday cake, but they offered everything from Pina Colada to Maple, and Kat was so wonderful and patient with the kids. Thus ends a solid three week run of "happy birthdays" and making wishes in front of flickering candles. As for me, I wish to slow down time just a little.
My sweet friend and manager at Clover in Carytown happened to come across this dress on one of their racks when I told her about Olive's upcoming unicorn party. It was PERFECT.
Okay guys, we can't do it all. I phoned it in for the cake and cupcakes: Ukrops Yellow Cake with vanilla buttercream frosting (because Olive loves plain ol' vanilla). I bought rose gold powdered cake spray from Michael's and the unicorn cake topper is from Amazon.
Rose gold table runner, also from Amazon.
The smell from the cotton candy machine alone was so yummy!
Favor bags which included "Unicorn Poop" (recipe here), stamps, rainbow pencils, unicorn figurines, and tattoos.
