2016 Favorites: My People.

Confession: Being a mom of three and owning a business is something I'm still trying to figure out. (And this is my fourth full year of doing it). The balance between being present with the people I love and creating the art that I love is tricky, and I don't think I'll ever get it perfectly right. So there are those times, naturally, when the mom guilt seeps in. I wonder if I took enough pictures of them this year. Did I brush them off too much when I was trying to finish up that gallery? Or do I take enough "real" pictures where they feel like they can just be themselves and wear what they want?

But when I went through and purged all of my old files like I always do at the end of every year, some of that paranoia was put to ease when I came across some images of them that, quite frankly, I'd forgotten about. (Mom brain at it's finest, right?) Some were the result of a quick snap or two when the camera happened to be nearby. They were far from perfect, but they were moments I might have otherwise forgotten. Others were a little more intentional (birthday shoots and vacations). Nevertheless, they were mixed in with the ones I had marked as favorites, but I suddenly saw them with a different perspective. That's one of the things I love most about photographs: they freeze one second in a frame, but we can see those pixels with fresh eyes months or years down the road. Context is everything. So, to recap, here are some of my favorite "seconds" from 2016 with our crew. Here's to a new year and new perspectives!
